my first knit socks.

first socks!
I finished my first pair of knit socks last week!  I loved knitting these up.  They are a very basic sock, just a simple 2x2 ribbing, and they are so soft and cozy.

first socks!
I just learned to knit this past October while at the Sewing Summit, so this is by far the most advanced knitting project I've done.  And to tell you the truth, it wasn't bad at all!  Knittinghelp.com is really helpful, it had a great video for turning the heel and picking up stitches for the gusset.  The other tutorial that was helpful for me was one for the kitchener stitch by Knitty that I used to close up the toes.

Madelinetosh sock is the nicest yarn, and I am a big fan of the oxblood color.  The yarn is really squishy and easy to work with.  I am looking forward to experimenting with other sock yarns. Any recommendations?

So yes, I think I have have a new obsession.  Since I've finished these, I've casted on another pair and am halfway done.  Knitting is the perfect hobby for me right now.  Finley is such a busy little 18 month old, and sewing is hard to do right now.  But this is just perfect.  I see lots of socks in my near future.
Ravelled here.

  2. I'm pretty sure there's a rule about not coveting thy neighbour blogger's new knit socks... and I'm pretty sure I just broke it. Oh well, what can you do ;o)

  4. Are you interested in sticking with semi-solids or are you looking at variegateds and striping yarns as well? I've knit quite a few, and I have favorites from each category. (I just added you on Ravelry, username: Wit, so that you can have a peek at what I've used.)

I'm currently working in Sunshine Yarns luxury sock, and it's lovely all around. It might be my new favorite.

  7. Really nice socks and I love the colour! I started making socks in November and so far my favourite yarn is Sweet Georgia's Tough love sock yarn. Has a bit of nylon, which helps in the wear and tear and was wonderful to knit with too.

  14. Eeep, they're so pretty darling! Madelinetosh is by far my favourite yarn but I used Malabrigo Sock to make the Damson Shawl last year and it is really lovely too (and the price is awesome to boot)!

  15. Madelintosh is such a beautiful sock yarn, and you did an amazing job on your first pair of socks! You might like Opal sock yarn; it's a self-striping yarn so it forms fun patterns as you knit. I try not to look at the swatch pictures so I can surprised by the pattern as it knits up. Koigu also makes a hand-painted sock yarn called the Painter's Palette (in a wonderfully soft super wash merino). And one of my favorite slipper patterns is actually an oversized sock felted down to size, http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter02/PATTfuzzyfeet.html — I've had great success using Manos wool with this pattern. I'm guessing that Malabrigo would also be fantastic. Happy sock knitting!

  16. I knit a pair of these just before Christmas and loved them, in fact I think it was exactly the same colour. However, about a month ago, the heel on one wore completely through. I was so disappointed as I love working with Madelintosh yarn and also love the finished product. I hope you have better luck with yours. I have since heard that it helps to knit socks with a yarn that has a small amount of nylon in it to help them wear longer.

Also wanted to tell you I'm currently making your Starry Eyed Quilt and I love it!!!! I'm using Moda's Ruby line and it is such a happy quilt. Thanks for providing it!
